Silk Scarves - Secret History of Silk Scarves:

The simple scarf has a remarkable history that many people may not be aware of. The very first uses of silk scarves are unclear with historians and archaeologists differing in their assessment of the very first use of silk scarves.

Archaeologists believe that the first use of scarves (silk or otherwise) as an adornment was about 2000 years ago. In 1974 there was a discovery of a huge tomb dating back to ancient China about 260 BC. This tomb held more than 7000 Chinese warrior figurines who had pieces of silk cloth wrapped around their necks.

Many historians believe China may well have been the birthplace of the “scarf” but a few centuries later. Around 230 BC the Chinese Emperor Cheng used pieces of silk cloth wrapped around the necks of his warriors to designate rank. His “officer” warriors wore silk scarves and the ordinary rank warriors were issued with cotton scarves.

Ancient Egyptians used scarves as an indication of social status and authority.

Thai Silk- Exhibition of Thai Silk Quality:

This is a video of Thai Silk quality on display at a recent international agricultural field day.

From the entrance to the Thai Silk pavilion you can see that the star attraction at the field day was Thai silk.

Did you notice the King and Queen of Thailand? My Queen is a very enthusiastic supporter of the Thai silk industry.

The field day was held at the university of Ubon Ratchatami, a city about 100 kilometers from our village.

It was an extremely popular exhibition with both Thai people and the many tourists who visited the exhibition.

Silk cocoons were on display as were all parts of the handmade Thai silk creation process.

The founder of Thai Silk Magic, Amnuai Beckenham, was busy all day. She and her team at Thai Silk Magic were invited to give demonstrations on all sorts of things to do with the creation of high quality handmade Thai silk.

Thai Silk Magic Country Music Show:

For 3 days in the middle of April the Thai people celebrate their New Year. The typical greeting of Sawadee pee mai are heard everywhere – which in English means Happy New Year.

This period is called Songkran and it’s also a huge 3 days water festival and fun.

To help the celebrations Thai Silk Magic sponsored a Thai country music show
to entertain our village guests who had come from all over Thailand.

Thai country music is called “Mor Lum” and the songs are sung in an Isaan dialect
– a combination of Thai, Laos and Khumer.

I know you won’t understand a single word but listen for a few seconds and enjoy.

Silk Scarves - Tying Up Loose ends:

Silk scarves: In this video you will see how Dao creates the wonderful silk scarf fringes that have become so popular with our Thai Silk Magic customers.

Many of you have asked how we create these fringes for our silk scarves so now you will be able to see for yourself.
Like all our processes it is handmade and very time consuming.

As you can see Dao selects 15 to 20 threads then rolls them on her thigh just as her grandma did so many years ago.
Each bunch of threads is rolled separately and tied off at the end. Then 2 lots of the rolled threads are combined and tied together.

It takes about 20 minutes per scarf and you know very few of our skilled weavers have mastered the simple skill of creating the silk scarf fringes.

Amazing Natural Dyes - Rare Wild Flower Dyes:

In this quick video as part of our Amazing Natural Dyes series you can see Dao and our 2 teenage girls, Am and Wan with freshly gathered very rare wild flowers.

Today they are very excited because these wild flowers haven’t been seen for 3 or 4 years.

The wild flower is called “klingtar” and it produces wonderful natural dye colours including greens, pinks and greys. They’re normally discovered around the klongs which are small dams in the rice fields around our village. But we haven’t seen them for 2 or 3 years so this is quite an exciting day for everybody.
